カテゴリリンクは、その前にある空白文字を消し、その後のテキスト部分がリンクであれば、後にある空白文字も消してしまいます。このテンプレートは、カテゴリによって周囲の空白文字を除去されないようにするためのものです。最初のカテゴリの前、もしくは最後のカテゴリの後に配置します。
